Fiji Financial Services Sector Assessment |
June 2010
This report provides an assessment of the financial services sector in Fiji. It is based upon a field research conducted in 2009 by Basix, a premier provider of microfinance services and promoter of sustanable livlihoods in India. The report highlights that while the financial services sector in Fiji is well developed when compared with other Pacific Island countries, there are missed opportunities to provide better financial services and there is a need to ensure better financial awareness and capacity building.

Financial Capability, Financial Competence and Wellbeing in Rural Fijian Households |
April 2010
This report contains findings of a survey conducted in 2007/08, some 18 to 24 months after the introduction of training and banking services, by the UNDP Pacific Centre in conjunction with Massey University (New Zealand) and the National Centre for Small and Microenterprise Development (NCSMED).The survey, a first using a quantitative methodology, was conducted in 25 villages in the Naitasiri Province involving interviews with both the male and female principal financial decision maker in each household. The findings are considered to be also representative of other rural communities in Fiji.
The survey validated that households that attended financial literacy training and have savings account enjoy significantly higher standards of living and financial security compared to those that had no access or even access to just one of these two interventions. It also revealed that villagers who demonstrated more competent financial behaviour focused more on investment like improving or extending their farms, thereby generating more income.
It showed that investing in financial literacy training that is accessible and convenient to women gives the greatest returns to rural households. Women accept the principal role in the management of household finances in rural Fijian households and are demonstrably more competent than men at managing household finances and at saving.
