Immediate & Medium term plans: Stocktake and Analysis of SAI's in the Pacific

The UNDP Pacific Centre is completing a Stock-take and Analysis of Social Accountability Initiatives in Pacific Island Countries implemented from 2000-2007. The final report is expected to be ready in Q3/2009. The data gathering was done in 15 Pacific Island Countries through desk reviews, country visits (in (can you please list the countries)) and verbal and written interviews. The stock-take/analysis aims to provide insights to help inform the UNDP Pacific Centre how best it can develop and design effective support programmes to promote general and social accountability.

Based on the assessment, UNDP Pacific Centre will identify good practice experience and lessons learned (i.e., what works and what does not work, and why) and suggest recommendation(s) that take into account the specific Pacific contents and constraints. The study is expected to be completed in mid 2009 and the report will be launched in late 2009.

Once the report is launched the UNDP Pacific Centre will organize a Regional Gathering on Social Accountability in late 2009 or early 2010 to present the Social Accountability Stock-Take & Analysis. This workshop will lay the ground for agreed priorities and plan for Social Accountability work in the region as in the planning session participants will identify interests in strategic national level Social Acountability initiatives; building technical and advocacy skills of NGOs and CSOs; strengthening Social Acountability initiatives at the local level, working with local government entities to build capacity to respond to Social Acountability demands, and harmonizing and capitalizing existing Social Acountability related work supported by different donors and other organizations. This will also be an opportunity to share experiences of Social Accountability work in the Pacific and provide a venue for the CSO participants and other stakeholders to identify needs (can you explain needs for what) and plan accordingly..The follow-up process after the workshop will be in the form of discussions with groups/government entities/donors to (a) assess the capacity, potentials, and needs; (b) developed detailed plans to move forward.
