Democratic Governance
Field Study

A field study is being done in selected Pacific Island Countries to (i) identify previous and on-going initiatives involving interactions between local government – traditional governance system; (ii) get views on the various challenges of the existing governance system; and (iii) generate suggestions and identify concrete steps to bring about a greater harmonization between the traditional and modern governance systems.

The study will analyze the nature and dynamics of the interaction between traditional system and local government by providing an analysis of the underlying drivers of change, the adjustment and the underlying additional challenges/coping mechanisms.

The study will identify lessons learned from the analyses of these interactions  and experiences. The report will suggest recommendations and identify possible approach(es) for promoting more effective consultation, collaboration and partnership between local governments and traditional systems to improve service delivery; and respect to rights based principles of community empowerment, equity, participation and ownership.

The study is scheduled to be completed in late 2009.
