Democratic Governance

UNDP is committed to a human rights-based approach (HRBA) to development. Human rights and HRBA are reflected throughout the UNDP Pacific Centre's work. In addition to “increased commitment to right-based development and human rights” being one of the core components of the PCs Democratic Governance practice area, human rights issues are also integral to the other 5 governance focus areas.

The UNDP PC Justice and Human Rights Programme provides governments, civil society and UNDP country office operating throughout the Pacific with:

  • Policy research analysis and advocacy,
  • programme development and technical support,
  • policy advice and
  • capacity development and training.
The UNDP PC is now a leading development partner in the Pacific on human rights based approaches to development and is an important stakeholder on human rights issues in the Pacific. The UNDP PC works with a range of stakeholders: governments, NGOs and regional organizations to strengthen national and regional commitment to human rights by Pacific Island Leaders in the Pacific Plan.
