Trade Pasifika 2012: Promising the Best the Pacific has to offer Under One Roof
[Suva, June 8] Pearls, honey and footwear from Fiji, vanilla from Niue, exquisite handicraft from the Marshall Islands, salt from Christmas Islands, coconut wood furniture as well as goods manufactured in other parts of the Pacific and service providers will be part of the more than 50 exhibitors at the first ever Trade Pasifika 2012 that will be held in Denarau from June 25-27.
The three day event offers a combination of product and services exposition and targeted knowledge talks from trade, export and import specialists. Open to registered participants and to the general public (from 3.30 – 6pm daily), Trade Pasifika 2012 will showcase produce from the Pacific and provide a space to identify new markets for them. The event has been organized by the Pacific Island Private Sector organization (PIPSO) with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Centre, Secretariat of the Pacific community (SPC), AusAID’s Pacific Leadership Programme, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the Melanesian spearhead group.
Chairperson of the organizing committee, Kaliopate Tavola said Trade Pasifika 2012 was an opportunity to boost the exports from the Pacific.
“The Pacific Island countries are net importers. MostPacific Islandcountries do not export goods and services in significant quantities. We hope that through the Trade Pasifika 2012, more Pacific producers will be able to export their produce to a range of markets,” said Mr Tavola.
“We have lined up a range of products from different parts of the Pacific. We have a good representation from the primary, manufacturing and service sectors from Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia,” he said.
Three workshops on issues such as facilitating trade, regional trade agreements and improving small to medium enterprises competiveness, marketing and quality Assurance will also feature at the event. A particular focus of the event will be to showcase women in business. Women entrepreneurs from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Samoa, and Vanuatu will showcase their products at the Trade Pasifika 2012, which will be held at the Sheraton.
