UNDP's Gender Head in Fiji for Talks
[Suva – October 12] Winnie Byanyima, the Director of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Gender Team will be in Fiji this week to hold consultations with UN staff and stakeholders on gender and development. Ms Byanyima is based at the Bureau for Development Policy in New York.
During an open forum organized at the UNDP Pacific Centre on Wednesday October 14, Ms Byaniyama will discuss gender equality in the Pacific with regional development agencies, civil society organizations and other stakeholders.
Her discussions will focus on gender considerations for disaster preparedness and recovery, especially in light of the tsunami in Samoa and Tonga, the gender dimension of the global economic crisis in the Pacific, gender and HIV in the Pacific and gender based violence, amongst other topics.
On Friday October 16, Ms Byanyima will present on Gender and Climate Change at a consultation on the next Asia Pacific Human Development Report (APHDR) on Climate Change. This consultation will be attended by stakeholders like regional development partners, academia and civil society organizations, among others.
Ms Byanyima is a national from Uganda where she was elected three times to the Uganda legislature and was a founder of the Assembly’s women’s caucus. Before joining UNDP, Ms. Byanyima served as Director, Women, Gender and Development Directorate of the African Union Commission.
